With all the hype about whether or not the cutoff date really affect children, we begin to take a deeper look. The dreaded August first deadline in New Jersey causes problems for many children who are born in the summer months and show those in early months of the school year benefit from this date.
But are there really benefits to red shirting a child and holding them back in Kindergarten. In theory there are many concepts supporting how the starting point of a child will have effects on them in the long term. Advantages of staring early can include things such as finishing school younger. Finishing when they are younger increases the ability to invest in their education throughout their life to gain a return . Children will possibly learn more at school than at home, and parents who are aware their children are young for their age may increase the amount of attention they put towards a child’s education.
On the other hand, there are possible disadvantages of starting at an early age. These disadvantages can include things such as children not being able to learn as well, social skills may be less advanced, and older kids having the ability to do better on exams.
Research has shown those who start school later tend to score higher but after an accidental experiment by the Norwegian army they have determined otherwise. An experiment having children start at age seven instead of five only represents that children do better because they are older not because they started earlier. Starting date of a child’s education will not have an affect on their ability to learn. What does have an affect is their age and maturity.
At Math Genie we can relate to this idea because we propose the idea those children are able to learn better if starting at a young age. We encourage parents to begin their children in our program at age three because this is the age that they can begin to interpret information and apply it. When teaching a child and enriching their education from such a young age it benefits them because they are being exposed to information that develops their brain and make what we call new connections. The more connection a child is able to make when they are young the smarter a child becomes.
